Short answer: ski masks and balaclavas are fine for kids if they fit, but the Blockhead ski mask by blockhead.shop is not a kids' mask. It comes in one adult size, made for heads about 22–23 in (56–59 cm). Many kids under about 12 have smaller heads, so on them it may be loose. Measure the head first. If it's well under 22 in (56 cm), look for a mask sold in a kids' size instead.

Why does fit matter more on a kid?

A full-face mask that's too big doesn't just look baggy. It can twist when your child turns their head or falls, and the eye opening can slide off their goggles. That's annoying on a flat path and not what you want on a slope. A mask that fits stays put, so the eye opening stays lined up with the goggles and the mask stays tucked under the helmet.

Is the Blockhead ski mask made for kids?

No. Blockhead is a bright yellow full-face knit balaclava with a blocky toy-like head and a cartoon face. With a cartoon face, it's easy to see why it looks like a kids' thing. But it's designed for adults: one size, polyester stretch knit (about 150 g), with one wide eye opening sized for ski goggles. There's no kids' size. We'd rather tell you that here than have you find out on the first morning of the trip.

How do I measure my child's head?

  1. Use a soft tape measure, or a piece of string and a ruler.
  2. Wrap it around the head just above the eyebrows and the tops of the ears, where a beanie sits.
  3. Keep it snug but not tight, and read the number where the ends meet.

Then compare it to the table below. Head size varies a lot between kids of the same age, so measure instead of going by age.

Head measurement What to expect with Blockhead
Under 22 in (56 cm) May be loose. The further under, the looser. Not recommended for young kids.
22–23 in (56–59 cm) The range it's made for. Many teens and adults fall here.
Over 23 in (59 cm) It's stretch knit, but it may feel snug.

More detail, including glasses, is in our balaclava sizing guide.

What about teenagers?

Many teenagers are already close to adult head size, so Blockhead can work for them. Measure first. If they're in the 22–23 in (56–59 cm) range, it should fit like it does on an adult. It fits under most ski and snowboard helmets and works with their own goggles. Goggles aren't included.

What should a parent look for in a kids' ski mask?

  • A real kids' size, chosen by head measurement, not age.
  • An eye opening that matches their goggles, so there's no gap or pressure on the nose.
  • A thin enough fit to go under their helmet without pushing it up.
  • Nothing that sticks out on top (big ears, horns) if they wear a helmet.
  • Something warm enough for the day you're planning. Funny masks, ours included, are made for fun on lift rides and cold days, not as a technical base layer.

Can the family still match?

Yes, in a way. The adults and teens with heads in the 22–23 in range can wear Blockhead, and the younger kids can wear a yellow or funny mask in their own size. Then everyone still fits the same family photo. For adults in the group: 2 masks get 15% off, 3 get 20% off and 4 or more get 25% off, applied automatically. See the group ski costume page for crew orders.

What if I order and it's too big?
